モミ Momi species

PinaceaeAbies

Momi fir is in the pine or Pinaceae family and is native to moderate elevations on the islands of Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Yakushima in Japan. It can grow to over 50 m tall.

  • Crown is broadly conical, straight branches rises at an angle of about 20° above horizontal.
  • Needles are flattened (spreading at nearly right angles from the shoot), 2–5 cm long and 2–4 mm broad. They are bright green above, and grayish-green below (due to stomatal bands).
  • Needles are attached to the twig by a base resembling a small suction cup.
  • The species is monoecious. Seed cones are 7–15 cm long and 3–5 cm wide, tapering to 2–3 cm, upright (unlike pendant cones in spruce), bluntly rounded tips, green, maturing yellow-brown. Cones are fragmenting, disintegrating at maturity in October.
  • Shoots are grooved, buff to grey-brown, finely pubescent; bark is scaly grey-brown, with resin blisters on young trees.
