Abies procera

noble species

PinaceaeAbies

Noble fir is in the pine or Pinaceae family and is native to the Cascade and Coast Mountain Ranges of Washington, Oregon and California in United States, growing at higher altitudes. It is quite an attractive tree for a Christmas tree.

  • Needles are 1–3 cm long and 1.5–2.0 mm across, distinct blue-green above and below and are spirally arranged on shoot, twisted to face up. They are attached to the twig by a base resembling a small suction cup.
  • The species is monoecious; male pollen cone is small, reddish, beneath the branches; female seed cone is unique in being erect, large (11–22 cm long) and having purple scales mostly hidden by yellow-green bracts; cone ripens to brown, disintegrating to release the winged seeds in fall.
  • Bark on young trees is smooth and gray with resin blisters, becoming red-brown, rough and fissured on old trees.
