Pinus wallichiana
Himalayan speciesHimalayan pine or Bhutan pine is in the pine or Pinaceae family and is native to the mountains of eastern Afghanistan, east across northern Pakistan and northwest India to southwest China. It can reach 50 m in height.
- Needles are in fascicles (bundles) of 5 and 12–18 cm long, very flexible and drooping. Branches are in annual whorls.
- Species is monoecious; male strobili are borne low in the crown in dense clusters; young females are borne higher in the crown and start out erect before becoming pendant.
- Seed cones mature in 2 years and are very long and slender, 16–32 cm in length, yellow-buff when mature, with thin scales.
- It is popular for planting in parks and large gardens.
