Pinus strobus
eastern white speciesEastern white pine is in the pine or Pinaceae family and is native to eastern North America, in Canada from Newfoundland to the Great Lakes and southeastern Manitoba, south in the United States to Minnesota, the Appalachians and Georgia and Alabama. It reaches a height of about 30 m tall.
- It is in the white pine sub-genus (Strobus), with 5 needles per fascicle, very fine, up to 15 cm long, with a deciduous sheath. Branches are in annual whorls.
- Seed cones mature in 2 years and are up to 20 cm long, cylindrical, narrower than western white pine, rounded cone scales, colour yellowish green to light brown, on a 2-cm stock, cones dropping soon after the seed is shed.
- Bark on older trees is reddish brown to gray-brown, with prominent fine scales with long ridges and darker furrows.
