Carolina silverbell is a member of the Styrax or Styracaceae family and is native to the southeastern United States. As a small tree, it grows up to 10 m in height.

  • Leaves are ovate, up to 12 cm long, finely toothed.
  • Flowers are drooping clusters of 2–5 white or pinkish-white, bell-shaped flowers about 12 mm long, appearing in April about the time leaves are emerging.
  • Fruit is an oblong drupe with 4 wings, initially yellowish-green, drying out to reddish brown by fall, persisting into winter.
