Stewartia monadelpha
tall speciesTall stewartia or Siebold stewartia is in the tea or Theaceae family and is a medium-sized tree native to Korea and Japan.
- Leaves are alternate, simple, oval to elliptic, up to 13 cm long, glossy dark green above and are thinly hairy on both sides; foliage turns orange, purple, red in late autumn.
- Flowers develop in early summer, are camellia-like, up to 5 cm across and are white with violet anthers.
- Fruit is a reddish brown woody capsule, up to 1.3 cm long, with 4 or 5 angles.
- Bark is smooth tan orange in colour and flakes to reveal lighter cream patches below. Young shoots are covered in down.
