Picea omorika
Serbian speciesOmorika spruce, or Serbian spruce is a member of the pine or Pinaceae family. It was found in a small area of the Drina River Valley in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina and western Serbia by a botanist in 1875. It has a total natural range of only about 60 ha.
It generally grows to only 20 m tall and is noticeably narrow, making its form suitable as an ornamental tree in large gardens without dominating the area. It is found in gardens all over Europe and North America.
- Leaves are needle-like, 10–20 mm long, up to 2 mm wide, blunt, flattened in cross-section (not common for a spruce), dark blue-green above, and blue-white below. Like all spruce, needles are mounted on short stocks.
- Cones are pendulous, non-fragmenting, 4–7 cm long, spindle-shaped (broadest in the middle), dark purple when young and dark brown when mature.
- Bark is thin, dark gray-brown in color, smooth, becoming flaky or scaly with age.
