Picea chihuahuana
Chihuahuan speciesChihuahua spruce is a member of the pine or Pinaceae family and is native to northwest Mexico. It was only discovered as a species in 1942. It can reach up to 35 m tall.
- Crown is narrow-conic, with a few long branches and many short branches; shoots are short, stout.
- Leaves are needle-like, 17–24 mm long, stout, 4-sided, viciously sharp. Needles are on short, woody pegs (sterigmata).
- Cones are pendulous, non-fragmenting, broad cylindrical, 7–12 cm long and 3 cm broad when closed, opening to 4–5 cm broad; scales are stiff, apex truncated (almost square-ended).
- Bark is thin, scaly, flaking off in plates.
