The Chinese sassafras is in the laurelor Lauraceae family and is native to China (provinces of Anhui, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangsu, Sichuan, Yunnan and Zhejiang). It is a deciduous tree reaching a height of up to 35 meters.

  • Leaves are alternate, gray-green, ovate or obovate, 9–18 cm long and 6–10 cm broad with 2-7 centimeter, slender, reddish petioles. Leaves may be two-lobed or three-lobed.
  • Flowers are yellow and are about 4 mm across.
  • Fruit is a waxy, blue-black drupe 1 cm long containing a single seed.
