Rhus copallinum
winged speciesThe winged sumac, shining sumac or dwarf sumac is in the cashew or Anacardiaceae family and is native to eastern North America. It is a deciduous open-spreading small tree that grows 3.5–5.5 m tall, spreading by root suckers to form large colonies in the wild.
- Leaves are alternate, pinnately compound and up to 60 cm long with 9–21 oblong-lanciolate, untoothed, shiny dark green leaflets; leaves turn a brilliant orange-red in the fall.
- Plants are dioecious (separate male and female plants); tiny, greenish-yellow flowers are borne in compact, terminal panicles up to 20 cm long.
