The royal poinciana tree is in the pea or Fabaceae family and is native to Madigascar. It is grown in many tropical parts of the world as an ornamental tree.

  • Leaves are compound (doubly pinnate), light, bright green, with a feathery appearance. Each leaf is 30–50 cm long with 20–40 pairs of primary leaflets (pinnae), each divided into 10–20 pairs of secondary leaflets (pinnules).
  • Flowers are large, with 4 spreading scarlet or orange-red petals up to 8 cm long, and a 5th upright petal called the standard, which is slightly larger and spotted with yellow and white. They appear in corymbs along and at the ends of branches.
  • Seed pods are green, up o 60 cm long and 5 cm wide, flaccid when young, turning dark-brown and woody.
