Laburnum alpinum
Scotch speciesScotch laburnum is a member of the pea or Fabaceae family and is native to Central and Southern Europe, and has naturalized in Scotland. It is a small deciduous tree or large shrub, typically growing 4–6 m tall as a rounded tree and somewhat shorter shrub. It is similar to L. anagroides.
- Leaves are trifoliate, clover-like, glossy, medium to dark green, to 7.5 cm long, producing little fall color.
- Flowers are bright yellow, pea-shaped, in drooping racemes to 40 cm long bloom in mid-spring. /i>
- The seed pods are legumes, 5–7.5 cm long, with black seeds that contain cytisine, an alkaloid extremely poisonous to humans as well as goats and horses, especially when not ripe.
