Lindera reflexa
mountain speciesThe mountain spicebush is in the laurel or Lauraceae family and is native to China. It is a shrub or small tree reaching up to 8 m tall.
- Leaves are deciduous, alternate, leaf blade ovate or ovate-elliptic, 9–12 cm long and 2.5–8 cm across, with 6–8 pairs of lateral veins, leaves green above, with pale greenish and white pubescent undersides; petiole 6-17 mm long; leaves turn showy yellow in the fall.
- Plant is dioecious, (males and females on separate plants); male umbel is 3–4-flowered, female umbel 4–5-flowered, flowers yellow or greenish-yellow, showing in April.
- Fruit is globose, 7 mm in diameter, red at maturity in later summer.
- Bark is brown, with longitudinal splits and pits; young branchlets are yellow-green, smooth, non-lenticellate, pubescent when young; winter buds are corniform-conical, bud scales red.
