The little epaulette tree is native to central China (northern Fujian, northern Guangdong, Hunan, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, northwest Zhejiang) and Japan (western Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku), reaching up to 15 m tall.

  • Bark is brown, smooth with pale striations; branchlets initially are covered in radiating fine hairs, almost smooth.
  • Leaves are papery, 6–14 cm long and 3.5–8 cm broad, elliptic to obovate, upper surface largely glabrous, lower surface densely covered with radiating fine hairs, 7–9 secondary veins on each side of the midrib, margins minutely serrate, apex acute to acuminate; petiole 1–2 cm long.
  • Flowers are about 1 cm long, with narrow petals, arranged in panicles 3–8 cm long; stems are 0.1–0.2 cm long; flowering is in March to April.
  • Fruit is an ovoid drupe 1.2–2.2 cm long, 5-winged, densely tomentose, ripening in May to September.
