Sycopsis sinensis
Chinese speciesChinese fighazel is in the witch-hazel or Hamamelidaceae family and is native to central China and Taiwan. It is a bushy shrub or small tree reaching up to 12 m tall.
- Leaves are evergreen, leathery, ovate or lanceolate, 5–11 cm long and 2.5–4 cm across, glabrous and dark green above, paler and quite glabrous beneath; petiole is 0.8–1.8 cm long.
- Flowers are in clusters less than 2.5 cm long, of 7–8 flowers, each with 6–10 stamens and reddish brown bracts that enclose the inflorescence; bisexual flowers have a floral cup 1.7–2 mm, pubescent, sepals ovate, filaments slender, 1–1.2 cm; anthers are red, 1.8–2 mm, apex acute [for more complete description of flowers, please refer to Flora of China].
- Fruit is a dry, woolly, egg-shaped capsule, 8 mm long.
