Buttercup winterhazel is in the witch-hazel or Hamamelidaceae family and is native to Taiwan and Japan. It is a deciduous multi-stemmed shrub growing 1.3–1.8 m tall.

  • Leaves are alternate, simple, 4–7.5 cm long, cordate leaf base, some marginal teeth, pubescent, dark green colour; yellow gold fall color.
  • Flowers are pale yellow, fragrant, in 2.8 cm long drooping racemes, with each raceme having 2–5 flowers; flowering in March/April before the foliage.
  • Fruit is a two-valved, dehiscent capsule.
