Corylopsis glabrescens
fragrant speciesFragrant winterhazel is in the witch-hazel or Hamamelidaceae family and is native to Korea and Japan. It is a deciduous multi-stemmed shrub growing 2–4.5 m tall.
- Leaves are alternate, simple, 5–10 cm long, cordate leaf base, dentate margin, pubescent, dark green colour; yellow gold fall color.
- Flowers are pale yellow, fragrant, in 2.5 cm long drooping racemes, flowering in March/April before the foliage.
- Fruit is a two-valved, dehiscent capsule.
- Bark is brown; buds are large, sessile, greenish-brown to brown-reddish brown composed of 3 glabrous scales
