Callicarpa americana
American speciesAmerican beautyberry is a member of the mint or Lamiaceae family and is native to the southern United States (from Maryland to Florida, west to Texas and Arkansas) and also Mexico, Bermuda, the Bahamas and Cuba. It is valued for producing large clusters of purple berries which are edible to birds and deer.
- Deciduous leaves are elliptic to obovate, green, 2.5–7.5 cm long, turning reddish purple and yellow in fall.
- Relatively insignificant flowers develop into plentiful bright violet to magenta berry-like drupes surrounding the stem, peaking in October and falling when winter sets in.
- A variety with white berries is cultivated under the name Callicarpa americana var. lactea.
