Evergreen spindle is in the bittersweet or Celastraceae family and is native to western China. It is a shrub that can grow up to 4 m tall.

  • Leaves are evergreen, opposite, oval-lanciolate, 5–11 cm long and 4.5 cm broad, pointed, with shallow, spine-tipped teeth.
  • Flowers are usually 4-petaled, greenish-yellow, in dense, rounded, 3–4 times divided, terminal clusters 7–7.5 cm across.
  • Fruit is 1.5 cm long and 1.3 cm across, somewhat square-sided and four-lobed, orange to red, with its full beauty evident in December when it ripens and splits, exposing reddish seeds.
