Euonymus atropurpureus
American wahoo speciesAmerican wahoo or eastern wahoo or burningbush is in the bittersweet or Celastraceae family and is deciduous shrub native to the eastern North America from southern Ontario in Canada, south to northern Florida and Texas in the United States. It is a deciduous shrub that can grow up to 8 m tall.
- Leaves are opposite, elliptical, up to 8.5–13 cm long and 3.2–5.5 cm broad, abruptly long pointed, with finely-toothed margins, leaves are green above, paler below often with fine hairs, turning bright red in the fall.
- Flowers are bisexual, 1–1.2 cm in diameter, with 4 greenish sepals, 4 brown-purple petals and 4 stamens; they are produced in small auxiliary cymes.
- Fruit is a smooth reddish to pink 4-lobed capsule up to 1.7 cm diameter, each lobe containing a single orange seed with a fleshy red aril.
