Winterberry spindle is in the bittersweet or Celastraceae family and is deciduous shrub native to northern China. It is a deciduous shrub that can grow up to 7 m tall.

  • Leaves are simple, opposite, elliptic, up to 6–10 cm long and 2–4 cm broad, pointed, with finely-toothed margins, turning red in the fall.
  • Flowers are 4-merous, 8–9 mm in diameter, sepals ovate, petals white, lanciolate or long ovate, pointed tips.
  • Fruit is a capsule, 4 angles and deep grooves, brown or yellow brown to red-brown, 9 mm in diameter, capsules splitting open when ripe; seeds are dark brown, partially covered with an orange aril.
