Euonymus oxyphyllus
Korean speciesKorean spindle tree is in the bittersweet or Celastraceae family and is a small tree native to Japan and Korea. It can grow up to 7 m tall.
- Leaves are opposite, ovate or ovate-oblong, 3.7–8 cm long and 4.2 cm broad, pointed, toothed margins, dull green above, pale beneath, glabrous on both sides, turning dark orange-red in the fall.
- Flower is a twice or thrice-branched cyme, 1.5 cm wide; petals rounded, greenish purple.
- Fruit is about 1.3 cm long, nearly globose, pendulous on long slender stalks, slightly ribbed, rich carmine colour, 4 or 5 lobes, after lobes split, it is 2.5 cm wide, revealing the scarlet-coated seeds within.
- Young shoots are glabrous; terminal winter buds are pointed, up to 1.3 cm long.
