Yunnan poplar is in the willow or Salicaceae family and is native to southwest China. It can reach up to 25 m tall.

  • Leaves are deciduous, alternate, simple; leaves of vigorous shoots are papery, from ovate to broadly ovate, 5–16 cm long and 2.5–5 cm wide, with acuminate apex, broadly rounded base and serrate, glandulous margin; upper side is bright green, glabrous, underside is greyish-white with reddish veins; leaves on short twigs are from ovate to ovate-lanceolate, 8–17 cm long and 4–12 cm wide; petiole is thick and reddish, 1–4 cm long.
  • The tree is dioecious; male flowers are in catkins 12–20 cm long, with 20–40 stamens; female catkins are 10–15 cm long, flowering in April-May.
  • Fruit is in hairless capsules, opening into 3 to 4 valves.
