Phellodendron japonicum
Japanese speciesJapanese cork tree in the citrus or Rutaceae family is native to central Japan. It can reach up to 33 m tall.
- Leaves are odd-pinnate, 25–34 cm long, 7–15 leaflets each 5–7.5 cm long, broadly ovate, pointed, oblique at the base, dull green, glabrous above and downy beneath, on a short stalk; leaves turn yellow in the fall.
- Species is dioecious; male and female flowers are in panicles on separate trees.
- Fruit is rounded, 1 cm across, green in the summer and ripening to black in the fall. It is distinguished from the other species by the thick, greyish down beneath the leaflets, and by their broader proportions.
- Bark is thick and corky with notable vertical ridges.
