Redbud Hazel is in the witch-hazel or Hamamelidaceae family and is native to woodland habitats in China and Japan. It is a medium-sized deciduous shrub growing to 3.0 m tall.

  • Leaves are alternate, simple, leaf shape resembling leaves of redbud (Cercis), length to 10 cm long, blue-green, turning from orange to red-purple in the fall.
  • Flowers are small, bisexual, 5 spreading petals, dark purple, about 1 cm across, paired back to back.
  • Fruit is an obovoid capsule, 2-lobed, containing several glossy black seeds; pods ripen in autumn of the year after flowering.
