Lenga beech is in the southern beech or Nothofagaceae family and is native to the temperate forests of Chile and Argentina southern Andes Range to Tierra del Fuego. It grows up to 30 m tall.

  • Leaves are deciduous, dark green, and 2–4 cm long and 1.2–2.2 cm wide, with irregularly lobed margins. Leaves turn yellow and reddish tones in the fall.
  • Branchlets and sub-branchlets are arranged distinctly in one plane, somewhat resembling elms in the winter.
