Corylus fargesii
Farges speciesFarges hazel is in the birch or Betulaceae family and is native to China (south Gansu, Guizhou, Henan, Hubei, Jiangxi, south Ningxia, Shaanxi, northeast Sichuan). It can reach up to 25 m tall.
- Branchlets are gray, pubescent, slender.
- Leaves are deciduous, alternate, simple, 6–9 cm long and 3–5 cm across, 1–1.5 cm long petiole, broadly oval or ovate to roundish, rounded, coarsely, doubly toothed, heart-shaped or rounded at the base, pointed.
- The species is monoecious. Male flowers form catkins that are pale yellow to reddish and 3–7.5 cm long, notably visible in mid-winter before the leaves of most species are out. Females are 2–4 in a cluster, bracts forming a tubular sheath 2.5–-5 cm long, enclosing 1.3 mm wide nuts.
- Bark is spectacularly exfoliating.
