Chinese catalpa is in the bignonia or Bignoniaceae family and is native to China.

  • Leaves are 8–15 cm long, opposite (or sometimes in whorls of 3), broadly ovate, occasionally lobed, straight or heart-shaped at the base, taper-pointed, on up to a 10 cm-long stock.
  • Flowers are up to 3.8 cm long and nearly as wide, rosy pink, spotted in and around the throat with brownish red, and stained with yellow; they are produced in 7-15 together in corymbs; corolla is bell-shaped, with 5 rounded, fringed lobes.
  • Fruit is a long, thin hanging bean pod up to 45 cm long.
  • The winter twigs of the catalpas are like those of few other trees, having sunken leaf scars that resemble suction cups.
