Acer longipes
长柄枫 speciesAcer longipes is in the soapberry or Sapindaceae family and is native to China (Gansu, Henan, Hubei, Ningxia, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Tibet, and Yunnan). It is a medium-sized tree, reaching up to 18 m in height.
- Bark is grey to olive-brown, branchlets initially smooth and dark brown, later rough and silvery.
- Leaves are deciduous, simple, opposite, papery, 8–15 cm long and 7–15 cm across, palmate with 3 (sometimes 5) shallow lobes; upper surface is glabrous, lower surface persistently grey, pubescent, especially along the veins, margins entire, lobe apex acuminate or aristate; petiole is 5–9 cm long, slender, glabrous, exudes milky sap when broken; autumn colour is clear yellow.
- Flowers are staminate or hermaphrodite; pistillate flowers are yellow-green, 5 mm across, in groups of 5, petals shorter than the sepals; flowering is in April.
- Fruit is a winged seed (samara) 1–1.3 cm long, in pairs, yellowish brown when mature, wings spreading acutely or erectly, ripening in late summer.
- Flower buds are large, prominent in the dormant season; twigs are red-brown, glabrous, peppered with callous dots.
- Bark is pale brown or gray.
