Campbell’s maple is in the soapberry or Sapindaceae family and is native to Bhutan, northern India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Vietnam, as well as parts of China (southern Sichuan, southern Xizang, and northwest Yunnan). It can reach up to 15 m in height.

  • Leaves are deciduous, simple, opposite, palmate, 8–15 cm long, with 5 (7, 9) lobes with sinuses ½ the length of lobes, lobes lanceolate or ovate-oblong, margin remotely or doubly serrate, pointed, leaf glabrous when mature, tufts of hair at vein axils; upper surface is dark green and glabrous, lower surface pale green; petiole is 4–6 cm long, glabrous. Fall colour is yellow.
  • Species is dioecious; inflorescence (flowers) are in terminal 4–6 cm wide panicles, flowers are 5-numerous, cream to yellow.
  • Winged samaras are double, spreading at an angle of near 180°, with the whole fruit being 3–4 cm wide.
