The Manchurian ash is in the olive or Oleaceae family and is native to parts of China (Ganstu, Guizhou, Shaanxi, Sichuan and Yunnan). It grows to 28 m tall.

  • Leaves are opposite, pinnately compound, 15–25 cm long, with 7–11 leaflets which are 5–10 cm long and 1.4–3 cm broad, fine-toothed and slender-pointed.
  • Flowers are produced in early spring, before the new leaves, in compact panicles.
  • Fruit is a samara comprising a single seed with an elongated apical wing.
