Acer wuyuanense is in the soapberry or Sapindaceae family and has been found only in Jianxi Province in southeastern China. It is a small tree, reaching up to 7 m in height.

  • Bark is gray or dark brown, branchlets thin, glabrous, pale green or auburn, winter buds are small and oval.
  • Leaf is papery, nearly circular, length and width about 7–9 cm, base round or truncated, sparsely subulate, often 5-lobed, middle lobes and lateral lobes oblong or nearly ovate, apex caudate (tail-like) with blunt serrated edges; sinuses between lobes are deep below blade middle; colour deep green, glabrous; 5 main veins, 10–12 pairs of lateral veins, slightly prominent below, small leaf veins are not significant; petiole is thin, 3–5 cm long.
  • Flowers are in a panicle at the top of the branch, 6–7 cm long, about 5 cm in diameter, flowers 1.5–2.5 cm long. Flowers are heterozygous (with male flowers and bisexual flowers); 5 bracts, pale purple green, ovate or suborbately ovate, 2 mm long, 1 mm broad; 5 petals, white, round or ovoid, slightly shorter than sepals; 8 stamens.
  • Fruit is a winged samara, in pairs (double samara); nutlets are oblong, 6 mm long, 4 mm wide, wing-shaped, 8–10 mm wide, together with nutlets, sanmara is 2.8–3 cm long, open to near horizontal. Flowering is in April, fruiting in September.
