Acer miyabei

Miyabe maple or Miyabe’s maple is in the soapberry or Sapindaceae family and is native to Japan (Hokkaido and the northern area of Honshū). It is medium-sized tree, reaching up to 20 m in height.

• Leaves are deciduous, palmate, 7–20 cm long and 12–20 cm wide, 5-lobed, with base 2 lobes smaller, with a 5–15 cm petiole (the petiole bleeds white latex if cut); lobes are ovate with long blunt tips; margins cut into several large, rounded teeth.
• Species is dioecious; Flowers yellow, downy, produced in the spring when leaves appear, a few together each on a slender stalk in corymbs 5 to 7.5 cm long.
• Fruit has with downy nutlets; keys are 2.2–2.5 cm long, wings .08 cm wide, slightly reflexed beyond the horizontal position.
