Himalayan maple is in the soapberry or Sapindaceae family and is native to indigenous to Bhutan, northern India, and southwestern and central China (Guizhou, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Tibet, Yunnan). It is a medium-sized tree, reaching up to 20 m in height.

  • Bark is dark gray or gray-brown; branchlets are grayish, glabrous, winter buds ovoid.
  • Leaves are deciduous, simple, opposite, thin, papery, ovate or oblong, 10–20 cm long and 15–23 cm across, 5 primary veins, 10 or 11 pairs of secondary veins, 3 or 5-lobed (rarely 7), lobes ovate, margin with obtuse teeth, petiole is greenish, 5-15 cm long; autumn colour is yellow.
  • Fruit is a yellowish winged double samara, 2–2.5 cm long, glabrous; nutlets are oblong, wings spreading obtusely.
