Acer caesium
bluish gray speciesBluish gray maple is in the soapberry or Sapindaceae family and is native to India, Pakistan, Nepal and China (Gansu, Henan, Hubei, Ningxia, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Tibet, and Yunnan). It is a medium-sized tree, reaching up to 25 m in height.
- Flower buds are large, prominent in the dormant season; twigs are red-brown, glabrous, peppered with callous dots.
- Leaves are deciduous, simple, opposite, 5–20 cm across, palmate with 5 shallow lobes, roundish in outline; petiole is stout, 5-15 cm long.
- Species is dioecious; pistillate flowers are yellow-green, 5 mm across, in groups of 5, petals shorter than the sepals.
- Winged samaras are double, 3-5 cm long, glabrous, with the whole fruit being 3–3.4 cm wide.
- Bark is pale brown or gray.
