Korean hornbeam is a member of the birch or Betulaceae family and is native to Korea. It is a small tree, often multi-stemmed, reaching up to 9 m tall. It is a popular species for cultivating as a bonsai.

  • Leaves are deciduous, alternate, simple, broadly ovate, up to 5 cm long, veins in 10-12 pairs, not impressed above, hairy beneath. and 3 cm across, double-toothed and tapered at the tips; veins are prominently inset, giving a corrugated appearance; colour is yellow to reddish-orange in the fall.
  • Male and female catkins appear in spring at the same time as the leaves. Fruit (female) catkins are slender-stocked, 5-6 cm long, composed of papery overlapping bracts each about 2 cm long, maturing in the fall.
