The Chinese golden rain tree, Chinese flame tree or the Bougainvillea golden-rain tree is in the soapberry or Sapindaceae family and is native to southern China. It is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree growing to a height of up to 20 m tall. It is one of the few trees that bloom in summer.

  • Leaves are alternate, bipinnately compound, ovate shape, 25–35 cm long with 10–15 leaflets 5–10 cm long and with deeply serrated margins.
  • Flowers are small and yellow, with a touch of red at the base, with 4 petals and grow in panicles 20–50 cm long, flowering from July to August. Flowers are hermaphroditic (have both male and female organs).
  • Fruit is a 3-lobed paper, triangular capsule 3–6 cm long, faintly reddish colour, resembling a miniature lantern; 2–3 round black seeds 5–10 mm in diameter are contained inside.
