AraucariaceaeAraucaria

Rule araucaria or graceful pine is in the araucaria or Araucariaceae family and is native to New Caledonia; it can grow to 30 m in height.

It is a slow-growing plant tolerant of both very dry conditions and high winds, which many other species of araucaria will not tolerate.

  • Branches are arranged symmetrically around the trunk, which extend horizontally and then turn upward and branch out at the end, giving the tree an appearance sometimes compared to a chandelier.
  • Adult branchlets 2–2.5 cm in diameter, in long whip-like cords. Juvenile leaves narrow, scale-like, incurved, sharply acute. Adult leaves scale-like, dark green, twisted, imbricate, lanceolate, midrib prominent, apex incurved, 2–2.5 cm long by 1.1–1.4 cm wide .
  • Plant is monoecious; male cone is cylindrical, 13 cm long by 30 mm wide, scales triangular, pollen sacs 15, microsporophylls triangular; female cone is 12 cm long by 8 cm wide; bracts erect, triangular to 15 mm long with a wide base. Branches at the top of the tree tend to produce female cones, while branches lower down, male cones. The cones stay on the tree for 2–3 years while the seeds ripen.
  • Bark is dark brown, exfoliating in thin strips, or scaly.
