Shantung speciesShantung maple or purpleblow maple is in the soapberry or Sapindaceae family and is native to northern and northeastern China (the provinces of Gansu, Hebei, Henan, Jiangsu, Jilin, Liaoning, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Shandong and Shanxi).
- It is a small, rounded, deciduous understory tree up to 8 m tall, with a densely-branched, rounded crown.
- Leaves are opposite, simple, palmate, 5–13 cm across, with 5 triangular lobes, emerging reddish purple in spring but maturing to dark green; fall colours are of yellow and orange, with some purples and reds. Leaves may be truncate at the base as suggested by the species name; petiole exudes latex when broken.
- Greenish-yellow flowers appear in April-May in clusters, on stems.
- Fruit is a double samaras to 2.5 cm long, with 2 winged seeds spreading over 90 degrees, maturing in mid- summer.
