Japanese euonymus or Japanese spindle is in the bittersweet or Celastraceae family and is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to Japan, Korea and China. It grows up to 8 m tall.

  • Flowers are inconspicuous, greenish–white, 5 mm across, in clusters.
  • Fruit is a drooping 4-lobed pale green pod-like aril, which turns pink in the fall and splits open to reveal the fleshy-coated orange seeds, one per lobe.
