The purple-leaf sand cherry is the rose or Rosacaceae family and is an upright deciduous hybrid shrub that typically grows 6–10’ tall and 5–8’ wide. It also may be trained as a small tree.

  • It is most noted for its reddish purple foliage that retains good color throughout the summer.
  • Ovate-elliptical leaves are up to 5 cm long, with serrate margins, and are a distinctive and attractive reddish purple.
  • Fragrant, solitary, white flowers 1.3 cm across, blooming in April after the foliage emerges.
  • Fruit is often meager production of small blackish-purple drupes that mature in July.
