Ilex verticillata
winterberry speciesWinterberry or Canada holly is in the holly or Aquifoliaceae family and is native to eastern North America in the United States (Minnesota, and south to Alabama) and southeast Canada (from Newfoundland west to Ontario). It is a deciduous shrub growing to a height of 5 m.
- Leaves are glossy green, 3.5–9 cm long and 1.5–3.5 cm broad, with a serrated margin and an acute apex. Unlike in most hollies, they drop off in the fall, the plant remaining bare for the winter.
- The species is dioecious, with small (5 mm diameter) flowers with 5–8 white petals.
- Fruit is a round, red drupe (stone fruit), 6–8 mm in diameter, often persisting on branches long into the winter.
