The kobus magnolia or Japanese kobushi magnolia tree is in the magnolia or Magnoliaceae family and is native to forests of Japan and Korea. It is a deciduous, small tree which grows slowly but can reach 15 m tall and have a spread of 10m.

  • Tree is pyramidal when young, maturing to a spreading, dense, rounded form.
  • Leaves are simple, obovate, dark green, 7.5–15 cm long, with a pointed tip, smooth edges and smooth or glabrous underside; leaves have yellow fall colour.
  • Terminal flower buds are evident before leaves appear in spring, and are 2.5–3.8 cm long, with a silky, gray pubescence.
  • Flowers are on branch tips, white to pale pink, about 10 cm in diameter, typically 6 tepals (like petals), emerging in March to April before the leaves.
  • Flowers give way to aggregated aggregates of follicles, 2.3–7.5 cm long with red seeds that mature in late summer to early fall.
