red speciesRed mulberry is a member of the mulberry or Moraceae family and is a small tree native to Ontario, Minnesota, and Vermont south to southern Florida, and west as far as southeastern South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, and central Texas in North America. It grows up to 15 m tall.
- Leaves are simple, alternate, 7–18 cm long and 8–12 cm broad, mostly unlobed, (occasional lobes on 1 or both sides), serrated margin, cordate (unevenly aligned at the base) and tapering to a point; upper surface of leaves is noticeably rough, underside covered with fine hairs. Leaf exudes sap when petiole is broken.
- Species is usually dioecious. Flowers are single-sex catkins, males 2–3.5 cm long and females 1–2 cm long.
- Fruit is a berry (more technically a multiple fruit) 2–3 cm long, pale green, ripening to red or dark purple, edible and very sweet.
