The Armenian plum or ansu apricot is in the subgenus Prunus of the Prunus genus, in the rose or Rosaceae family. It likely is originally native to parts of Asia, although it is extensively cultivated in many countries and has escaped into the wild in many places. It is a small tree growing up to 12 m tall.

  • Leaves are alternate, simple, ovate, 5–9 cm long and 4–8 cm broad, with a rounded base, pointed tip and finely serrated margin.
  • Flowers have 5 white or pinkish petals, are 2–4.5 cm in diameter, produced singly or in pairs in spring before the leaves.
  • Fruit is a drupe similar to a small peach, 1.5–2.5 cm in diameter, yellow to orange, sometimes with a red tinge on side facing the sun. Surface is smooth or mildly pubescent. Enclosed seed is in a hard stony shell called a "stone".
  • 'Moorpark' is a common cultivar planted commonly in the southwestern United States.
