The green gage plum or P. domestica ssp. Italica var. clauduana is in the Prunus subgenus of Prunus genus, in the rose or Rosaceae family. It originated in the Middle East and was imported into England and France in the 1700s, then being transported into the American colonies.

  • Leaves are alternate, simple, ovate, up to 9 cm long and 4–6 cm broad, blunt-pointed tip and moderately finely serrated margin.
  • Flowers have 5 white or pinkish petals, are 2–4.5 cm in diameter, produced singly or in pairs in spring before the leaves.
  • Fruit is round, smooth-textured, pale green colour drupe with a seed in the middle.
