The Fang or monkeytail hornbeam is a member of the birch or Betulaceae family and is native to China. It can reach a height of about 20 m.

  • Leaves are alternate, simple, ovate, up to 27 cm long and 3 cm across, double-toothed and tapered at the tips; veins are prominently inset, giving a corrugated appearance.
  • Male and female catkins appear in spring at the same time as the leaves. Female catkins are 45–50 cm long, up to 2 cm broad, with papery bracts densely overlapping, maturing in the fall.
