Meliosma pinnata
worm-head speciesThe worm-head tree (Meliosma pinnata var oldhamii, also referred to as Meliosma oldhamii) is in the Sabiaceae family and is native to Japan, China and Korea. It is a small tree growing up to 15 m tall.
- Leaves are odd-pinnate, 15–50 cm long, with 5–13 ovate to elliptic-lanceolate leaflets, the lowest ones round to ovate, about 3 cm long and 2 cm across and the remainder increasing in size to 15 cm long and 2–5 cm across. They are pointed and toothed.
- Flowers are very abundant, small (4–6 mm across), white, in terminal upright panicles 20–30 cm long, flowering in early July.
- Fruit in the fall is a well-spaced round, red berry (drupe) up to 1 cm in diameter.
- The terminal bud in winter form has an unusual "worm-head" appearance due to the clustered and undeveloped leaves, leading to tree's name.
