Apple serviceberry is a hybrid cross between two species of North American serviceberry, downy serviceberry (A. arborea) and Allegheny serviceberry (A. laevis). It is a small, deciduous, usually multi-trunked understory tree or tall shrub which typically matures to up to 5 m tall.

  • Leaves are alternate, simple, oval, bronze-coloured, up to 5 cm long.
  • Flowers are white with 5 strap-like petals up to 2.5 cm long, hanging in dense, showy clusters in spring.
  • Fruit is an edible juicy black berry (pome) in clusters in late summer.
