Sorbus aria
common speciesWhitebeam is in the rose or Rosaceae family and is native to Europe. It is compact and domed, growing to a height of up to 15 m. The cultivar S. aria 'Lutescens' is planted in north-western North America as an ornamental tree.
- Leaves are alternate, simple, oval, thick, irregularly toothed, light green on top and white with felt-like hairs on the underside and can get up to 14 cm long. Petioles are less than 1 cm long.
- Flowers are hermaphrodites (each flower has both male and female parts), 5-petalled, cream-white, in clusters in the spring.
- Bark and twigs are smooth and gray.
- Fruit is an oval berry up to 1 cm long, initially green, turning red or scarlet in the fall.
